In many cases, the vital information was just passed onto the following generation by the way of mouth and skill. With the available records, it’s established that herbs were used as early as 2200 BC within the region of Sumeria. Nothing can be as fascinating as those herbs and their oils that were wont to embalm the mummies; early Egyptians were the primary people to possess romanticized several herbs by making oils and special concoctions. Plants with fragrant flowers and leaves are the foremost cherished objects of desire by the ladies within the royal courts of Egypt, Greece and Rome, while Chinese and Indian women used several herbs for elaborate god worshipping and ritual purposes. Every region during this world has its own indigenous herb and medicinal plants that are endowed with special herbal factors and characteristics.,

Egyptians: after you hear about the word “mummy” you’ll marvel at the amount of perfection with which the first Egyptians used several herbal plants to embalm their mummies. Available records suggest that herbs were used as sacrificial and worshipping objects by the royal court, while various recipes prepared by mixing several herbs were wont to treat many ailments and diseases. Indians: Earliest known records suggest that Indian sages chronicled and published the usefulness of many herbs and medicinal plants.

Chinese: other than Indians and Egyptians, nobody has ever used the magical properties of herbs better than Chinese people. they’re the primary people to possess invented an idea called “traditional Chinese medicine” and this school of medication has provided us a tremendous repository of herbs and their practical uses.

Greeks: Hippocrates has given the globe the primary extensive book on about 400 herbs. Greeks are the primary people to perfect the sphere of medication into something that’s really elaborate and artistic.

Romans: The secrets of herbal medicines were soon omitted to the adventurous Romans, who used the herbal remedies better than the other people. Romans have contributed widely to the sphere of herbs by developing several unique drugs and medicines. Today, countless people are vouching for his or her dependence on many herbs and their drugs. Herbs for the Circulatory System

The circulatory system is the lifeline of your body, and without a healthy circulatory system, you can never expect to have a healthy body and sound mind. With a good circulatory system, it is so easy for the body to transport nutrients and oxygen to living cells, and later collect waste and carbon dioxide from the same cells. It is a perfect system working in tandem with each other and ably supported by a dynamic heart! The vitality and the nature of the circulatory system are as important as any other body organ, and in case of pronounced weakness in our circulatory system, there’ll be a profound ripple effect on the whole body and its constitution. Thus, preserving the dynamics and health of the circulatory system is very critical for your body.

There is an established herbal treatment system available to cure anomalies and aberrations in our circulatory system. Herbs can really help your circulatory system to recuperate from debilitating diseases and symptoms. There are two main types of herbs that can be used to treat diseases of the circulatory system:

– Those herbs that act directly on your heart and,

– Those which heal symptoms of blood vessels, including peripheral vessels.

Some of the most common circulatory system diseases and symptoms are:

– Heart diseases of various kinds including angina,

– Uncontrolled and high blood pressure,

– excessive blood clotting,

– Peripheral vascular disease

– Strokes and Paralysis,

– Abnormally high-fat levels.

Naturally occurring herbs work wonderfully on your circulatory system and bring back the derailed system on to the right track. For example, without a perfectly working heart, you can’t expect the rest of the circulatory system to work with efficiency.

Being the naturally occurring pump, you’re expected to maintain the natural rhythm and frequency of pumping action of the heart. Herbs like Lily of the Valley, Motherwort and Figwort are known to act directly on the muscular structure of the heart and help it to generate fresh cell growth and regeneration. The glycoside residues of these herbs are very helpful in assisting the natural muscular action of the heart. Most of the herbs that are used in treatment assist the heart in maintaining its frequency and also in encountering the degeneration of cells due to old age.

As you age or if you have any circulatory system disease, you will feel that your legs are getting very weak and tender. This happens as a result of the constriction of blood vessels in the leg area. When a sufficient amount of blood is not supplied to your leg area, you will start feeling aged and debilitated. To counter these conditions and to postpone the effects of peripheral circulatory system anomalies, you can use several herbs and their derivatives. Most common herbs like Buckwheat, Cayenne, Dandelion, Ginger and Yarrow are known to cure peripheral blood vessel diseases, by working on the vessels to clear the blockage and obstructions.

Herbs could also be used as diuretics to improve kidney functions and avert renal diseases. Herbs like Dandelion and Yarrow are known to help the heart to retain its normal status and work in a proper condition. These herbs also include a generous amount of natural potassium which is an important mineral required by your system to get rid of wastes through the renal system. Herbs For Men

Do you feel that those herbal medicines and concoctions are reserved only for women? Hold on! you will be completely wrong! we frequently create a wrong notion that lays an excessive amount of emphasis on herbs’ special use just in case women. within the process, we tend to overlook the indisputable fact that men too have unique needs for herbs and their medicines! Herbs are known to play a vital health role, both just in the case of males and females, that too with equal intensity. Most of the physical and mental problems that are unique to menfolk are usually caused by pronounced imbalances within the essential hormonal levels and other factors. However, these problems occur as a result of a deviation within the levels of some critical sex hormones. Luckily, there are several herbs and their drugs that have the power to produce a special boost to the physical and mental constitution of the body.

As you age and become physically debilitated, hormonal levels drop and acquire confusion in your own body! But, nature has provided you a lot of wonderful herbs which will facilitate your overcome of these problems with renewed vigor and energy. together with adjustments in diet and exercise, various herbs can facilitate your balance of the confusing hormonal activity and restore perfect harmony to the full body. a number of the health problems experienced by males are unique to them, though many other health problems connected to heart, kidney, muscles and skins, are quite common to both men and ladies. Mostly, these problems include many sexual deficiencies, like impotence, reduced drive, ejaculation and prostate-related health issues.

One of the foremost important health issues that trouble males above 40 years old is impotence, and it’s estimated that there are almost 100 million males with mild to severe impotence symptoms. there’s a renewed interest level of using herbal concoctions and medicines to treat and cure male impotence. Herbal infusions are used in the past, and people herbal tonics and infusions that are used for treating impotence including Wild Oats and Chinese Horny Goat. Indians are known to use liberal quantities of Saffron, Ashwamedha and Ginger to cure impotence and to extend the drive.

Prostate diseases and symptoms are unique to men, and prostrate will be the foundation cause for several other serious health concerns. For low-intensity prostrate tumors, you’ll use herbs like Ginseng and Chaparral, while painful enlargement of the prostate may be treated by using such herbs as Ginseng, Echinacea, Yarrow, Dandelion and Marshmallow.

Here are other herbs that are wont to treat many other unique health problems encountered by males:

–Blood Pressure is understood to the one biggest health concern among males, and treating this condition becomes very tough and strenuous. Herbs like catmint, skullcap and mint are known to bring down the pressure levels to normal levels.

– Arthritis and Rheumatism: To ease the painful episodes of this disease, you may use herbs like Marjoram or Meadow Sweet.

While this space might not be enough to spotlight the importance of every and each herb, one can still understand the perceived importance attached to those wonderful herbs, that are harmless, highly effective and toxin-free. Go herbal today and revel in those innumerable health benefits.

Herb Cautions

Along with their perceived benefits and advantages, herbal drugs and medications are also known to cause low to moderate adverse effects, under very rare and some specific conditions. One of the greatest advantages of using herbs for providing good health and care is their relative safety and absence of harmful ingredients. Although these herbs are safe for treating many illnesses and disease symptoms, there are few herbs that could cause some sort of side effects at certain known dosages. Safe and sound use of herbs requires some advanced knowledge, not only of what to use and the overall quantity to use but also of what one should not consume.

Perceived toxicity and bad elements are not only the factors, to consider and assess while choosing a particular herb. You’ll need to know which herbs to use, at what levels and for which condition; more often we misuse most of the herbs and their wonderful qualities as a result of the paucity of relevant knowledge. Some of the well-known herbs are currently grown at an alarmingly increasing rate, as a result of excessive demand for those herbs. To increase the yield and harvest, people tend to use an exorbitant level of chemical fertilizers, and the chemical residues are always a big concern while consuming herbal drugs and medicines. Thus, you may also need to know, if the herbs you’re using are organic, commercial, or certified.

Educate yourself about these herbs and ask your herb supplier some probing questions to guarantee that you’re getting only the highest quality herbs in the market. This could often create the biggest difference in the products you make at your home. If you’re looking for a cheaper herbs, bear in mind that you may never get the quality you always wanted but may end up buying something whose quality is always doubtful.

The overall subject of which herbs are safe and which are not is always a big debate and often ends up confusing. To help you out, here are some of the herbs that could cause some sort of mild to moderate side effects:

St. John’s Wort is the most well-known herb that mimics the function of a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. MAO is generally used as an antidepressant to treat depression in people. When you take this herb along with synthetic MAO inhibitors, you may observe a steep spike in blood pressure that can cause seizures and strokes. Never mix this herb along with synthetic MAO inhibitors and if at all you’re using both, provide a sufficient gap between successive dosages.

During pregnancy and lactation, you may avoid some type of herbs like alfalfa, aloe vera, angelica root, buckthorn bark, burdock root, ginger, ginseng, goldenseal, Thelonious root, motherwort, mugwort, myrrh, Oregon grape, rhubarb and vetiver. In essence, it is better off to avoid, anything that causes an increase in menstrual flow and those substances that induce abortion.

You may also need to be on your guard while purchasing commercially available and over-the-counter herbal drugs that are sold in pre-packaged forms. You may not be getting what you’re paying for these drugs. Most of the commercial drugs that are sold in the market contain inert fillers and very cheap quality additives which are very low in potency and effectiveness. As a result, you’ll need to take enough caution while purchasing herbs and their derivatives. The best alternative for anyone would be to create their own herbal medicine by using authenticated, fully organic and residue-free ingredients.

Herbal  Chemistry

The mode in which a particular herb acts on a specific disease, or its concrete action against disease-causing agents is still uncertain and yet to be ascertained. However, researchers have a definite clue, as to how a particular herb can provide relief to specific diseases and illnesses; though the definite chemical pathway is yet to be studied in its entirety, one can attribute the success of herbs in treating a particular condition to their well-defined chemical structure and biochemical compounds.

Herbal chemistry or Herbal pharmacology (as it is known in a medical dictionary) is a complex subject that involves several hundred chemical compounds and their derivatives along with thousands of invisible biochemical molecules. A typical herb will contain almost 1000 different chemicals and molecules of varied biochemical compositions. Under usual circumstances, herbal medicine may contain all or some of the following type of chemical compounds:
Herbal Plant Acids
Herbal Alcohols
Herbal Volatile Oils
Herbal Carbohydrates
Herbal Phenolic Compounds
Herbal Tannins
Herbal Coumarins
Herbal Anthraquinones
Herbal Flavones
Herbal Saponins
Herbal Cardiac Glycosides
Herbal Bitter Principles
Herbal Alkaloids

Herbal chemistry is a challenging field, where a specialist can study and try for decades and still unsuccessful to know the total mystery of astonishing herbs. A day is not far away, and the time is not too distant when you’ll be able to understand the amazing properties of thousands of herbs!

Herbal Plant Acids

Most of the acids that are found in herbs are rather weak and mild, though some of them exist in free form. Acids are a major component of Herbal plants and a majority of these acids are found in compound forms in combination with salts, esters, or amides. So far, the impact of herbal plant acids is not yet understood properly and their perceived activity is limited in the context of overall herbal preparation. Fruits and vegetables contain a number of excellent plant acids and the beneficial effects of these acids are felt only when they are consumed on a consistent basis.

Herbal Plant acids are always carbolic acids with a simple chemical structure and these acid molecules join in various combinations to provide the following acid groups:

Monocarboxylic Acid: These are the simplest of all plant acids, with a very basic chemical composition holding its molecules together. Acids like formic acid, acetic acid and various fatty acids form the core group of Monocarboxylic acid.

Polybasic Acid: Most of the plant acids are polybasic in their nature and the basic chemical composition is made up of several simple acids. Oxalic acid, succinic acid and fumaric acids are some of the examples.

Hydroxy Acid: These acids are known to act both as alcohol, as well as plant acids due to their acidic and alcoholic structures. Citric acid, malic acid and tartaric acid are some of the examples of hydroxy acids.

Aromatic or Volatile Oils: These acids belong to a group of acids that are cyclic in their composition which is based on salicylic acid and phenol molecules.

Herb-wise, many of these acids are therapeutic in nature and are used sometimes as drugs for treating many simple symptoms and conditions. Unsaturated fatty acids are universally found in all plants and in-plant parts like seeds and other reproductive tissues. These herbal plant acids are very important in your diet and digestive activities; these acids are required for building and repairing cells and tissues, such as the cell wall membranes, and more importantly, tissues in the central nervous system, and also for prostaglandin synthesis.

Formic acid molecules from Stinging Nettle are especially helpful in treating arthritic conditions and joint inflammation. On the other hand, acetic acid forms the major base of kitchen-grade vinegar solution which is useful in the kitchen as a good digestive.

Succinic acids and tartaric acids find their use in many digestive functions and they help the digestive system in passing food from one organ to another in a smooth and fluid motion. Citric acids that are found in many fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of rare phytofactors that are useful in fighting diseases and infections. They are useful in flushing out bile stones and in facilitating the smooth flow of bile juice into the digestive system.

Herbal Alcohols

Drugs from natural sources are considered natural remedies of the highest order and these drugs contain only the potent extracts from herbs that will help you to reduce or totally remove disease symptoms. Herbal alcohol is an important parameter that serves many useful purposes. Herbal Alcohols can easily dissolve the healing substances that are found in the herb. The alcohol present in the herb can preserve the active components for longer durations and keep the herbal healing compounds intact without changing their chemical structure. Herbal alcohols will also, help your mucous membranes in absorbing these active medicinal compounds easily, and as efficiently as possible.

Plant alcohols are present in a herb, in minute quantities, and these amounts are so minute that your body can digest and eliminate them in a few minutes after ingestion. Alcohol is also known as ethyl alcohol, which is also called ethanol. Alcohol is also intrinsically present in the herbal cells, though in minuscule quantities. Alcohols can exist in many forms and compounds, and they can also attach themselves to some other vital herbal constituents. Several volatile oils and sterols contain many types of alcohols, some of which are simple alcohols, while others are complex compounds clinging to various other subcomponents of minor importance.

Other forms of herbal alcohols are secondary wax matter, alcohol combinations and many fatty acids. Herbal alcohols are found in leaves and other greener parts of the herb. Alcohol and water are the best solvents for mixing the herbal drug components. Alcohols in the plant will help you to dissolve the medicinal compounds. Plant alcohols are also natural stabilizers and excellent preservatives. In many cases, herbal alcohols are essential for the preparation of drugs from natural sources. Plant alcohols can easily dissolve active constituents of the herb, and they can enhance and help an easy passage of active substances through the mucous layers of the digestive system.

Herbal Alcohols are freely mixable in water and it also dissolves resins volatile oils, waxes, fats, fatty acids and numerous other substances. Though alcohols by themselves do not possess medicinal properties, they can supplement numerous other herbal chemical compounds with their own unique properties. For example, plant alcohol can coexist as a compound called geraniol (in rose Otto) and also as menthol in peppermint oil.

Syrups and tonics of herbal nature are rich in plant alcohols like simple ethanol and more complex tonics are combined with alcohols of higher chains. Alcohol in a herb provides a sedative effect when prescribed in large quantities. It is not surprising to see that each and every herbal tonic and syrup is intoxicating in nature, due to their alcoholic contents; however, the overall alcoholic strength is supplemented by artificially induced dietary ethanol by the drug manufacturer.

Herbal Alcohols are nature’s basic compounds that make a vital parameter for leading life. Without herbal alcohol, a plant simply can’t survive the onslaught of difficult elements of nature. Cell respiration and metabolic activities are complemented by those minute alcohol contents that are trapped in a cell or a tissue.

Herbal Volatile Oils

Of all the herbal chemical byproducts, herbal volatile oils are the most popular as it has captured the imaginations of people from virtually every race and country around the world. Also known as essential oils or aromatic oils, these special herbal volatile oils are used widely for a variety of diseases, ailments and symptoms. Volatile oils are also used for aromatherapy purposes, to help improve mood and reduce stress.

Herbal Volatile oils are found in some special herbs and medicinal plants, and most of these oils are chemically very unstable in nature and volatile in their properties. Chemical constituents like isoprene and isopentane are the backbones for any volatile oil, and both of these compounds may combine in different combinations to form terpenes. Herbal Volatile oils are found in more than 100 varieties of aromatic plants, and their geographical distribution is evenly spread across all the continents of the world. Aromatic plants are special in their nature, and almost every part of these plants exude some form of exotic fragrance and smell.

Depending on the type of oil and its combination with other molecules, the smell and fragrance may vary widely among plants and herbs. There are hundreds of different herbal volatile oils in nature and each of them has its own healing and therapeutic properties. Apart from their medicinal properties, volatile oils are also used widely in the perfume and cosmetics industries. Another main use of herbal volatile oils is to induce a special flavor to your food items and also to add an exotic culinary touch to your gourmet kitchen.

Herbal volatile oils are synthesized by a process called steam distillation that is designed to extract the vital constituents, by distilling various parts of a particular herb. There are other minor extraction processes like pressing and expelling methods; however, these methods are not really productive compared to steam distillation. Volatile oils are highly unstable and chemically fickle, with a lightning-quick evaporation rate. Any volatile oil is distinguished by its three special notes. The top note is the first stage that contains a highly unstable part, and this stage also involves a quick dissipation of harsh and heady constituents of the oil. The middle note is that special stage when the original fragrance components start to slowly spread through the air. The middle note is often considered the heart of the essential oil, and this part of the oil is used widely as aromatherapy vapors. Once this stage is passed, and as the effect of this stage slowly disappears, the endnote starts becoming dominant. This stage is what everyone finds in their home even after a long time. Experts call this lingering fragrance an exotic and heavenly feeling.

Most of the herbal volatile oils are therapeutic in nature with a number of healing properties. Once you inhale the herbal volatile oils of a plant or herb, you can feel relaxed and rejuvenated with a fresh lease on life. On the other hand, these oils could be used as local antiseptic agents to treat wounds, cuts and scratches. Oils are absorbed in the body by way of oral inhalation and when you inhale the oil, it is transported evenly into the body to the cells and blood. These inhaled compounds act on your body in several unique ways and means. These oils also act as recuperative and regenerative agents to help boost the immune system and help fight infections and illnesses.

However, herbal volatile oils aren’t suited for everyone. Some oils can be very strong and pungent and therefore inappropriate for pregnant women and young children while some special oils could be very toxic and degenerative on your skin. There are also some oils that can act on your central nervous system to relax and sedate your mind. There are others that can also remove feelings of loneliness and depression with their soothing and healing properties.

Herbal Carbohydrates

The dietary importance of herbal carbohydrates is understood by everyone and we are also familiar with different types of dietary carbohydrates like simple glucose, fructose, starch and cellulose. Each and every plant in this world is chiefly made up of various types of carbohydrates, and it is well assumed that these components exist in medicinal herbs as well. Herbal carbohydrates play a vital role in human metabolic activities by building a precious energy pool and a critical fat depository. Several components of sugar in combination with other dietary nutrients also act as important healing components.

Carbohydrates are basic building blocks of your body and they are composed of tiny components called sugars. In biochemical terms, carbohydrates are classified based on the number and type of sugars they contain in their structure.

Carbohydrates could be either very simple or heterogeneously complex according to their molecular structure. Three important types of sugar are:

– Monosaccharide or single sugars: Many sugars like glucose, fructose, galactose are called primary sugars of the plant kingdom. Apart from these simple sugars, plants also contain wood sugars like xylose, ribose and arabinose that act as secondary sugars in several metabolic processes. Simple sugars are not known to possess any pharmacological action on humans and they are metabolized through normal carbohydrate disintegration processes.

Disaccharide or twin sugars: These sugars are somewhat complex in their nature and contain two basic sugars in different combinations (which may be glucose + fructose, or glucose +glucose or glucose + galactose). Three main components of disaccharide are sucrose (glucose + fructose), maltose (glucose + glucose) and lactose (glucose + galactose). Most of these sugars are quickly broken down into simple sugars during carbohydrate metabolism.

Polysaccharide: Large in their molecule size and multi-sugar in their structure, the polysaccharide is a major group of sugars that also includes amyloses. Amyloses are the glucose storage deposits such as starch and glycogen (only in animals), cellulose and fructose-based insulin. There are several other minor glucose acids belonging to sugars like hemicelluloses, pectin, gums and mucilage.

Herbal carbohydrates gain importance when their polysaccharides are exploited to their fullest potential. Recent studies indicate the possibility of using polysaccharides as immuno-stimulants in counteracting many diseases and ailments. Of late, a North American herb called Echinacea has been subjected to many experiments to determine if it has any immuno-stimulatory properties. Along with this precious herb, many other medicinal herbs like Chamomile, Calendula, Wild indigo, and Saw palmetto, as well as Siberian ginseng, are also thought to possess several important medicinal properties. However, the basic herbal action of these herbal carbohydrates is generated while they are being absorbed in the gut.

Herbal celluloses are the most efficient roughage substances that help you to transport the digested food from the stomach to the rectum. Some classes of herbal drugs are modified to get absorbed either in the small intestine or large intestine. Pectin possesses a number of therapeutic properties compared to other carbohydrates and in the digestive tract, it acts as a wonderful laxative and a superb healing agent to cure several intestinal disorders like dysentery and infectious diarrhea. Its healing property could also be extended to cure ulcers and deep-cut wounds. Pectin activity can also help diabetic patients to delay the release of sugars from the food, while it is also known to reduce the levels of cholesterol in the body. Gums and mucilage are excellent agents that paint a coat of slime on the walls of the stomach, duodenum, small and large intestines.

Herbal Phenolic Compounds

An herb is a storehouse of many important plant constituents and molecules which in different combinations form an effective healing and therapeutic complex. As such you may never be able to find a single constituent in an herb that is wasteful and useless. Like any other plant constituents, herbal phenolic compounds are also highly useful in providing a host of healing properties that range from a simple antiseptic molecule to complex bactericidal factors.

Understanding the biochemistry and molecular structure of  phenol is actually very tough and tedious; a layman may never understand those intricate chemical structures of a phenol compound. In simple terms, herbal phenolics are called tertiary alcohols and these compounds are chemically very active and diverse. There are many types of herb phenolic compounds and each one of them displays its own special characteristics and traits.

Simple herb phenols are very basic in their chemical structure and they have a wide variety of therapeutic properties like anti-bacterial characters, antiseptic nature, and in some instances, they act as an anesthetic as well. It exerts an anti-microbial action due to the induction of structural damage in the cell wall membranes and internal structures. However, some of these phenols may inhibit leukocyte activity in the cell resulting in the gradual weakening of the body’s defense mechanisms.

Aspirin is a common drug that is made up of herbal phenols from sodium called Salicylic acid. Ester forms of Salicylic acid are presumed to be less active as they are less irritating to the stomach wall cells, whereas the salicylate forms are medically very active and strong, even in small concentrations. When taken orally, these compounds are strongly antipyretic and act to increase peripheral blood circulation and produce more sweat from the body. Herbal salicylic acid is catabolic in nature and also has the ability to quickly breakdown protein molecules.

 Here are some of the other herbal actions of Salicylic Acids;

– Salicylic acid possess diuretic properties,

– Salicylic acid is very effective analgesia,

– Salicylic acid is considered very effective anti-clotting agents that can help you stop uncontrolled bleeding,

– On the contrary and as a severe side effect, Salicylic acid could create ruptures in the stomach linings and cause a condition is known as “sub-mucous hemorrhage”.

Eugenol: These are some of the well-known herbal phenol compounds of immense repute. Obtained from the oil of Clove and Cinnamon, Eugenols are the natural anesthetic agents of the plant kingdom. These classes of herbal phytofactors are also good antiseptic agents that prevent ordinary infections and illnesses.

Thymol: Thymol is a special herbal phenol that is derived from Thyme and horsemint. It is a very effective anti-fungal agent and can be used as a topical lotion at about 2 percent concentration. The Thymol group of phenols are less dangerous to your stomach walls compared to a strong Salicylic acid drug preparation.

Herbal phenol compounds are nature’s wonderful gifts to mankind, and the invention of Salicylic acid will testify to this fact; aspirin is possibly the most popular drug ever and its uses in preventing heart ailments are already well documented.

Herbal Tannins

Herbal Tannins are the most critical chemicals in herbal plant chemistry and these components are found very widely throughout the plant world. Herbal Tannins from a large group of compounds called polyphenols and their role in the plant kingdom is a subject of controversy and available research findings suggest that they are the metabolic waste products of plants.

However, what is presumed to be a waste product for one living entity is a class of drugs to humans. One of the earliest uses for tannins is the tanning of animal hides and converting them into leather. This is possible because tannins break down protein complexes into insoluble enzymes and make them resistant to proteolytic enzymes.

This non-human use of herbal tannins have been extended to living tissues and this special usage is often referred to as “astringency”. Most tannins are sour in their taste and in Chinese medicine, astringents are frequently used as herbal drugs. Basically, there are two types of tannins: the hydrolyzable and the condensed tannins. The first types are the byproducts of simple phenol acids such as Gallic or ellagic acid, while the second types are compounds that turn brownish, when exposed to ambient air, and these compounds are the reason for the brown color of many plant tinctures that are used for healing wounds and cuts.

All tannins have similar properties in them and some of them are:
– they are easily soluble in water, but not in organic solvents,
– they can easily precipitate with protein molecules, polysaccharide and many glycosides. These compounds could be used as antidotes to heal many types of alkaloid poisoning,
– tannins when ingested orally will be unabsorbed in the gut and are passed through urine and feces.

The most common use of
plant tannins is for the treatment and cure of wounds, scratches and lesions. Herbal Tannins can also form a fine, thin protective layer over the wounds and prevent exposure to bad weather elements and microorganisms. Tannins could also be used to treat and heal serious burn wounds and help avoid septicemia.

On consumption,
herbal tannins also act as anti-inflammatory agents by forming a thin leathery layer on the sensitive walls of the stomach and duodenum. This fine action results in a healing application that prevents gastritis, enteritis, esophagitis and inflammatory bowel problems. Traditionally, herbal tannins have been widely used to treat severe cases of diarrhea and dysentery, with their prohibitive action on the possible inflammatory action of infection over the stomach and intestinal epithelial walls. However, on the downside herbal tannins may precipitate dietary protein and enzymes into insoluble compounds that are non-digestible and non-nutritious in their nature.

There is a huge amount of research findings on herbal saponins and these results are confirming the positive effects saponins have in the body. There are also many other studies indicating that herbal saponins exert oestrogenic and anti-oestrogenic effects. Currently, several leading universities and research institutions are busy seeking out many more healing properties that are beneficial, not only to humans but also to farm and grazing animals.

Did you ever smell the highly evocative fragrance of newly mown hay or grass in your backyard garden? Virtually every plant and grass in the world contains an aromatic group of compounds called coumarins, and these are the factors that provide lightly smelling fragrance to the leaves and stem of plants. Herbal Coumarins exist in almost every plant and herb family and these plants use them as self-growth inhibitors, as well as defensive compounds to fight infections and parasites. Many plants belonging to the group of   bean family, citrus family and parsley-fennel family, show a large number of coumarins in their biochemical structure.

Left by itself, herbal coumarins have a limited effect on your body, but one of its metabolites, dicoumarol, is a powerful anti-clotting agent. Modern medicine has employed coumarin, as an ingredient for Warfarin, which is an anti-clotting medication that is used as a preventive agent against the development of thrombosis. Plants containing coumarins such as Angelica and Lovage are used as diuretics and digestives. It is not yet clear as to how these minute compounds act or perform, though they are known to act as waste products, plant growth regulators, antifungal and microbial agents.

Coumarins are an important variety of organic compounds that are used as ingredients in food and cosmetics, optical brightening agent industry, and they are also dispersed in fluorescent and laser dyes. More commonly, coumarins display antifungal, hypotensive, anticoagulant and antimicrobial properties. Herbal coumarins are also phototoxic and skin sensitizing.
Coumarins are known to interact dangerously with other drugs that contain some MAO inhibitors, as well as specific antibiotic preparations. Your physician may ask you to ingest coumarin-based drugs, one or two hours before or after consuming all other drugs and medications. Dong Quai, a Chinese herb is possibly one of the classical examples of an herb containing a liberal amount of coumarins. The natural vasodilator compounds that are found in Dong Quai act by stimulating and exciting the nervous system and enabling smooth blood flow throughout your body, slowing the current pulse rate and by improving the circulation system. Coumarins are also known to contain very efficient antispasmodic properties, and this herb is very good in easing menstrual cramps and pain by relaxing the muscles in the uterus.

Herbal coumarins are also located in many parts of an herb called Tonka beans and the anti-coagulant properties of the coumarin compounds found in this herb are very strong and effective; with other sensitive drugs, this class of coumarin may cause blood hemorrhages. To use such a powerful plant factor, you may need to exercise enough caution and anticipate all potential health hazards.

Herbal Anthraquinones

Many herbs are proved to be excellent laxatives and purgatives of superior value and such herbs are common in the kingdom of plants. Herbs can cause various actions and reactions on your body system and organs, and gastrointestinal irritation is considered one of the negative actions that are caused by an herb. However this negative action could be a boon to your gastrointestinal system, because of the significantly altered gastric motility in your overall digestive process. Gastrointestinal irritation may be caused by several herbal factors including saponins, volatile oils and anthraquinones. Herbal anthraquinones are possibly the most important herbal factors that exert an action of irritation over your gastrointestinal system.

Herbal anthraquinones are found in a majority of plants and herbs, though its quantities are high in Senna and Rhubarb. One of the major pharmacological actions that occur after consuming herbal anthraquinone is a reduced transit time in the digestive process that may inhibit the quicker absorption of ingested drugs and medications.

Herbal anthraquinones are often yellow in color and very bitter in taste; their usual form is that of glycosides and the active forms are always stored in the bark of the plant. The more powerful agents that are stored in the bark of plants like Frangula and Cascara are stored more than a year or two, before they are consumed for treatment. The aging process actually reduces the degree of irritability, due to the changes in the glycoside and anthraquinone chemical properties.

When you orally ingest hydroquinones, their glycosides are rapidly hydrolyzed by bacterial colonies in the bowel, which results in a lag period of 10 hours between the ingestion process and softening of the stools. When you overdose by taking an excessive amount of anthraquinone, it will create a feeling of griping.

Anthraquinone laxative herbs possess qualities of “sacral irritants” and hence contraindicated in pregnancy. Senna has been shown to be very safe in pregnancy and lactation. Its syrup is also used as tonics for children. Overdoses of anthraquinone laxative herbs is a matter of immense concern and its extended use can lead to gradually declining bowel tonicity and extended periods of constipation.

Some of the herbs that contain herbal anthraquinones are:

– Aloe vera
– Senna
– Rhubarb
– Yellow Dock
– Butternut

Anthraquinones are also found in many other herbs and plants, usually in minute amounts, especially in species of Polygonum. There are small quantities of anthraquinones in some vegetables, like cabbage and lettuce.

Plant bark, roots and leaves are rich in hydroquinone and the isolate of hydroquinone is not really easy to extract in its pure form. You may prefer to limit the daily intake of anthraquinones to 25-30 mg per day, and restricting the duration of consistent use to 9-12 months, will be a satisfactory means of avoiding all serious problems relating to stimulant laxatives. Traditionally, herbal anthraquinones are also very effective natural dyes.

Herbal Flavones

Like all other plant chemical compounds in an herbherbal flavones are efficient therapeutic agents that are useful in treating many diseases, symptoms and conditions. The plant kingdom is full of different types of flavones and each one of them is entirely different from the other in their therapeutic characteristics. Till now, there is a confirmed record of more than 300 different varieties of herbal flavones (also called flavonoids).

Being a common group of herbal constituents among all plants, flavones play an important role in human metabolism due to:

– Their role as protective agents against common infections from fungi and bacteria,
– Their controlling function by many growths processes,
– UV radiation protection,

However, the medicinal action of flavones can not be classified as uniform, because of the inherent difference in physical and chemical structures among various flavones. But, all flavones have one medicinal property that is common to each other; flavones help in cases of abnormal capillary permeability and in case of digestive tract convulsions.

Sweet basil and Peppermint are two special herbs that show a wide variety of different flavones that are quite useful in treating several diseases. In combination with other compounds, herbal flavones display a helpful and complementary role in increasing the total efficiency of all herbs. Herbal flavones are useful in protecting the brain tissues from damage associated with the aging process or Alzheimer’s disease.

In a nutshell, the foremost medical properties of flavones are:
– Anti-spasmodic effects that help the body to counter spasm caused by some diseases,
– Diuretic effects to help the body recuperate from stress and fatigue,
– Sudorific effects to heal the body from specific conditions,
– Some flavones are very powerful and effective drugs for heart diseases,
–
Flavones can also, act as astringents to increase the capillary permeability in the circulatory system,
–
Flavones could also, be used to treat high blood pressure,
–
Flavones are excellent drugs for treating Arteriosclerosis,
Diabetes Type I and II could also be treated by administering known doses of flavones,
–
Flavones are useful in treating the delicate heart and it is possible to make it stronger by providing tonic made of flavones.
Flavones are quite easy to synthesize and isolate from herbal plants; several new biochemical methods have been widely employed to extract flavones for use in the pharmaceutical industry

Herbal Saponins

Herbal Saponins are vital components in a plant. It is well known that saponins that are isolated from herbs could be used in the synthesis of cortisone and many sexual hormones. Though saponins are not involved in direct action on the body system, you can definitely use them as raw materials to build up appropriate and all required chemicals.

Herbal Saponins are plant glycosides that are highly foaming and detergent in nature, and they are found in many herbs and plants. However, the name “saponin” is derived from an herb called Soapwort, the root and bark of which has been used as a detergent for hundreds of years. Some of the plant saponins are quite dangerous to pasture animals as they reduce the feed intake and growth rate of non-ruminant animals. Several types of pasture weeds may contain a large number of dangerous saponins and these may result in hazardous toxicities for some farm animals.

Herbal Saponins are also present in human foods like Soybeans, forage beans and Peas. However, the major source of herbal saponin is from Yuccawhich grows in the arid Mexican desert country of Baja California, and soapbark tree, found in arid areas of Chile. Saponins have a distinctive detergent or surfactant property because they contain both water-soluble and fat-soluble components that are highly active in nature.

Herbal Saponins can also, play an important role in human nutrition and dietetics; the blood cholesterol-lowering capabilities of dietary saponins are being studied in detail by nutritionists. The cholesterol-lowering effects are provided by a binding action of bile acids and cholesterol by saponin.  Yucca extracts are considered naturally occurring phytochemicals and they are currently used in the foods and beverage industry and also as herbal products.

Saponins from herbs are also used as effective anti-inflammatory drugs and plants like Golden Rod, Chickweed, Figwort and Wild Yam contains copious amounts of natural saponins. Another important function of saponins is their unusual expectorant action provided by stimulating the upper digestive tract and these are present in herbs like Primrose, Mullein, Violet and Daisy.

Recent studies at University of Toronto, Department of Nutritional Science, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada have advocated that dietary inclusion of saponins may offer a pharmacological strategy that is useful in lowering the risk of developing some types of cancers. Herbal Saponins are also known for their strong biological activity. Saponins may also function as a ”natural antibiotic” for plants themselves and now experts are looking at the possibility of how saponins help us in countering bacterial infections, combat fungus and viruses, and complimenting the effectiveness of some vaccines.

There is a huge amount of research findings on herbal saponins, and these results are confirming the positive effects saponins have in the body. There are also many other studies indicating that herbal saponins exert oestrogenic and anti-oestrogenic effects. Currently, several leading universities and research institutions are busy seeking out many more healing properties that are beneficial, not only to humans but also to farm and grazing animals.

Herbal Cardiac Glycosides

Herbal cardiac glycosides belong to an important category of herbal drugs whose bipolar actions include both beneficial and toxic effects on your heart. Herbs that contain cardiac steroids and glycosides have been used in many ancient civilizations since 1500 BC. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans initially employed plants containing cardiac glycosides as medicines for heart ailments. Higher toxicity levels from herbal cardiac glycosides were established in 1785, by William Withering, when he published his legendary literary work on the herb Foxglove.

Cardiac glycosides are in essence very effective herbal remedies with varied actions like poisons, emetics, diuretics and heart tonics. Modern cardiac steroids are also used as drugs for treating congestive heart failure and for reducing the ill effects of atrial fibrillation. However, their extreme toxic levels still remain a serious and critical problem.

Cardiac glycosides are those classes of medications that can assist your heartbeat to become slower and stronger, and also help you regulate pumping of blood. Larger quantities of a cardiac glycoside in your bloodstream can slow the heart rate to its below normal levels, that occur in patients who are undergoing treatment for kidney infections.
Examples of cardiac glycosides include:
– Digoxin (Lanoxicaps, Lanoxin).
– Digitoxin (Crystodigin).

Glycosides are in nature bound to sugar which is essentially glucose in composition. In some special classes of sugars like fructoside, the sugar is mainly fructose, while in a galactoside the sugar is galactose. This is probably the reason why sugar glycosides start working on your gut only after the dietary sugar has been weaned away.

Most of the
herbal glycosides are water and alcohol soluble, and it is very easy to create drug formulations from glycosides. A special class of glycosides is cyanoglycosides, which are found in many rose family plants. These glycosides are in fact, dangerous to your health, as they contain some amounts of cyanide. On the other hand, anthraquinone glycosides are excellent contact laxatives for your digestive system. These glycosides are found in herbs like Senna, Rhubarb, and in barks of Frangula. Most of these strong glycosides are rapidly addictive and habit-forming.

Herbal Cardiac glycosides are found in a number of plants including Foxgloves, Common Oleander, Yellow Oleander, Lily of the Valley, Squill, Ouabain, Dogbane, and Wallflower. Therapeutic and medicinal uses of herbal cardiac glycosides continue to be a source of debate, and people still contest their use in the medical fraternity. Cardiac glycosides have been also repeatedly found in Asian herbal preparation and they do cause a matter of great anxiety. Toxicity and poisonous reactions may result after consuming herbal teas prepared from herbal leaves, seeds and flowers that contain copious amounts of cardiac glycosides.

Herbal cardiac glycosides mainly create cellular and pharmacological effects on your cardiovascular system, neurological structures and gastrointestinal systems. However, their effect on your heart and circulatory system is radical and often highly toxic.

Herbal Bitter Principles

Of all the herbal chemical compounds that are chronicled in an herbal compendium, herbal bitter are best known for his or her unusual healing and medical properties. Herbal bitters are well recognized for his or her wonderful properties of healing several hepatic diseases and liver complaints. Foods that contain a generous amount of organic bitters are always overwhelming in taste, and that they also obscure the taste of other chemical components. Herbal bitterare toning, purifying, detoxifying and rejuvenating in nature. Bitter foods are useful in removing poisons from your blood and mother’s milk.

If you’re suffering wound infections and rashes, foods containing bitter principles are the simplest antidotes, while bitters also are indicated for treating skin disorders, fever, jaundice, and loss of appetite. Several bitter components are bactericidal, germicidal, and antiviral in their nature, in addition to anti-inflammatory in effect. Bitter foods are known to elevate the atmosphere element in your body and reduce the surplus amount of ills in other elements (as per texts of Ayurveda). Oriental herbal texts indicate that herbal bitters are Very light and cold in their nature and therefore the typical taste is because of the presence of varied components like caffeine, alkaloids and a compound called berberine.

The extreme dryness of bitters assists your body to induce eliminate excessive mucus, watery storage particles, and help remove pus from the injuries. per Oriental medicine, herbal bitters are beneficial as a slimming agent and this unique action helps you reduce your weight and increase bone weight. Bitter foods are expectorants in removing mucus from your duct, still, improve circulation.

Herbal bitter are usually catabolic in nature and hence an excessive intake is dangerous and debilitating. Bitter plants are poisonous in their actions, and a plant called Foxglove has been accustomed make a product called Digitalis. Several plants also contain bitter principles in their fruits, nuts and seeds, and these parts are regularly wont to make viable herbal medicines.

Several spices, vegetables, tubers and plants are bitter in nature, and once they are consumed internally, you will get various benefits and advantages. Culinary additives like turmeric, ginger, bitter gourd and plenty of leaves are bitter in nature, and most of those are excellent food items that will be consumed together with your food. Coriander seeds are excellent bitters and along with your food, they supply you with the most effective herbal healing properties. Bitters could also cause serious constipation in humans thanks to their hot properties and strength.

Herbal bitters are also prescribed for removing toxins from your body through feces and urine, while drugs containing bitters are useful in toning the liver and blood. Bitters are very strong and pungent in their chemical nature.

Herbal Alkaloids

Of all the herbal constituents, alkaloidsare known to be more potent and highly toxic with an exceedingly severe degree of direct action on your body. Herbal alkaloids are also the most studied compounds with tons of information available on hundreds of different alkaloids. It is also needless to say that the action of any alkaloid is basically very stressful. Alkaloids are one of the most basic compounds of any plants and virtually every plant on the planet has some form of alkaloids in their composition. However, the number of alkaloids may vary from herb to herb, with a high degree of alkaloids in plants like Datura and Belladona.

It is quite well known that some herbs that have a significant amount of alkaloids contain a toxic principle that is almost directly in action. Two such examples are strychnine and coniine which act as poison to the central nervous system and ultimately cause death. However, there are also many herbal alkaloids that have an analgesic aspect like Devil’s Claw. In medicine, an example of this is morphine and codeine.

Herbal alkaloids are more soluble in alcohol than in water and most of the decoctions and herbal infusions in alcohol invariably contain a large number of alkaloids. Herbal infusions made in water tend to contain a lesser amount of alkaloids as the solubility capacity of herbs on the water is quite less. Of late, alcohol tinctures containing therapeutic principles of a particular herb are widely used among patients.
So, what is an alkaloid? So far, the attempts to define an alkaloid have been not satisfactory and you may really get confused with those available definitions. Most probably, the word “alkaloid” took its birth from two simple words- “vegetable alkali”. There are several types of alkaloids incorporated in plants and each one of them has a different chemical nature. However, all of them contain a copious amount of biological nitrogen and its derivatives. Alkaloids display an unusual property of acting directly on your central nervous system including those big networks of nervous pathways.

Herbs are made up of several types of alkaloids, many of which are different in their chemical structure and nature of the action. Some of the well-recognized alkaloids are:

– Pyrrolidine classes of alkaloids are possibly the most potent of allalkaloids and some of the examples of herbs that contain this alkaloid are Henbane, Datura, Belladona and Bittersweet. Other examples are herbs like Cocaine producing plants.

– Pyridine or Piperidine class of alkaloids is essentially Vitamin B in nature and they are derived from plants like tobacco and Lobelia. These alkaloids are classified as nervous system stimulants and blocking agents.

Apart from these two major alkaloids, there are several other alkaloids that are very active in nature and potent in their composition.

Many herbal alkaloids, with their poisonous and psychological effects could be used as effective medicines and drugs in curing some diseases and ailments. Narcotic alkaloids like morphine and codeine are effective medical agents, while quinine, nicotine and caffeine are potent psycho-stimulants and mood enhancers.
